4H/FFA MARKET BEEF SHOW SCHEDULES

Rules:

  1. The rules listed in the General Rules section of the Boone County Fair Book, in addition to the following rules, will apply to the Market Beef Show.
  2. 4-H and FFA exhibitors may own their livestock in partnership (joint ownership) with immediate family. Immediate family is defined as brother, sister, blended brother/sister, parent, or legal guardian of the exhibitor.
  3. All market beef must be weighed at the February weigh-in to be eligible to show and sell at the County fair.
  4. Beginning in 2025 there will no longer be Market Heifer classes.
  5. Exhibitors of market beef which do not meet minimum weight requirement for Livestock Sale (1,100 pounds) must decide immediately after Fair Weigh-In to either take market beef home or show in light weight class.
  6. ALL MARKET BEEF MUST BE DRY BEFORE CROSSING THE SCALE AT THE FAIR WEIGH IN.
  7. Each market calf will only be allowed to cross the scale for weigh-in one time.
  8. Check with superintendent prior to unloading cattle for stall assignments.
  9. All cattle should be double-tied in stall areas with halter and neck rope. Unmanageable cattlethat cannot be shown in the ring will not be judged or receive a ribbon or be eligible for sale. Nose leads are permissible. The judge or superintendent will make the final decision on cattle that are unmanageable in the ring.
  10. No artificial grooming practices, internal or external, will be allowed, anyone breaking this rule will be disqualified and not allowed to show or sell.
  11. Hair: the use of artificial tail fins or the addition of any hair or hair-like substance to the animal’s body, excluding a false tail switch, will not be permitted, anyone breaking this rule will be disqualified and not allowed to show or sell.
  12. Only two market beef may be weighed and shown at the Boone County Fair. (You may weigh up to six market beef at the February weigh-in, but only two of those which are weighed will be eligible for entry in the Boone County Fair. If two animals are shown in the same class, another youth (Boone County 4-H or FFA member) may show one.
  13. Market Beef must have been calved after January 1, 2023 and owned by the exhibitor by the February weigh-in.
  14. Market beef will show by weight not by breed.
  15. All market beef will be entered in the Rate of Gain Class. Home raised market beef identified at February weigh-in will be automatically entered into the Home Raised Class. 16.There will be a top five overall placing of the beef animals, and if in the champion drive Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion animals are from the same division, the third through the fifth place animals from that division are eligible to return to the champion drive one at a time in succession order for the top five placings overall.
  16. No warts or ringworm will be tolerated on any market beef. Market beef may be checked by a state-licensed veterinarian who has the authority to have any animal deemed a health risk removed from the fairgrounds. Animals who are found with warts and/or ringworm may not be shown or sold, at the discretion of the beef superintendent.
  17. Steers must be completely sterilized and all market calves must be dehorned before the February weigh in or they will not be weighed. Any visible scur must be less than ½ inch long.
  18. All bulls in the breeding show over 12 months of age must be broke to a nose lead.
  19. .Breed animals showing in the breeding show must meet the definition of the breed association. Physical copies of breed registration papers must be presented at check in. NO PICTURES OF PAPERS ON PHONES.
  20. Exhibitors may enter as many breeding animals as they wish in a single class. 22.Any alleged rule violation must be accompanied by a $100 deposit in order to be investigated, if valid the deposit will be returned, if not valid the deposit goes to the beef committee. The depositor has the right to present their opinion to the chairman.
  21. The market beef show is open to reciprocating counties. These exhibitors will pay the same entry fee and will be allowed to show in the market division classes. If the champion and/or reserve champion market beef is shown by an out-of-county exhibitor, we will then select an in-county champion and/or reserve. Out-of-county exhibitors are not allowed to participate in rate-of-gain or home-raised classes. Out-of- county animals will not be allowed to sell.
  22. All rule changes for the current show year must be made by November 1 meeting with no rule changes made after that for the current fair year.

One of the following classes must be listed for each breeding beef animal entered:

• Chianina

• Crossbred

• Gelbvieh

• Hereford

• Limousin

• Maine Anjou

• Red Angus

• Salers

• Shorthorn

• Simmental

• Foundation Simmental


Breeding Beef Show Classes

• Heifers must be born between Sept. 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023

• Bulls must be born between January 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023

• Calves in cow-calf classes must be born in 2023.

*PLEASE NOTE: If the Feb. 10th date is cancelled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, the make-up weigh in date will be February 17, 2024. This date will ONLY take place if circumstances prohibit weigh-in to take place on the original date. There is only ONE weigh-in date for beef exhibitors and it is MANDATORY to weigh in any market beef animals.
